Points to Ponder   Number 23    4th November, 2014

Did you know that the Christian population of the ME, which was 20% at the beginning of the twentieth century, is now less that 4%?

Point to Ponder: Why have the heart-rending words of Father Gabriel Naddaf to the 27th session of the UN Human Rights Council been totally ignored by the international media?

While I stand before you today, the earth of the Middle East is soaked with the blood of Christians being killed daily. Do you know that at the start of the 20th century, Christians comprised 20% of the population of the Middle East? Today they comprise only 4%. Do you know that over the past years some 100,000 Christians have been killed annually? In Iraq alone, more than 77% of the Christians have fled during the year 2000, in addition to thousands killed and expelled. Some 2 million Christians lived in Syria, but today, they are less than 250,000”.

Could it possibly be because there is not a word of condemnation of Israel?

Three months after the military confrontation between Hamas and Israel, the Egyptians are also waging their own war on terrorism in north Sinai, a war which once again exposes the double standards of the international community and human rights organizations toward Israel.

No censure when Egypt, in the name of the war on terrorism, demolishes hundreds of houses and forcibly transfers thousands of people but a cacophony of condemnation when Israel fires back at those who launch rockets and missiles at its civilians.

In order to prevent terrorists from using smuggling tunnels to launch attacks on Egyptian soldiers and civilians Egypt is establishing a security buffer zone along its shared border with the Gaza Strip and tightening the blockade on the Gaza Strip, thereby collectively punishing the Palestinians living there, not only Hamas.

The Palestinian terror groups have been cautious in their response to Egypt’s measures and are not going to retaliate by attacking Egypt. They know that Egypt’s response to such an attack would be more severe than Israel’s military response.

The world reaction? A deafening silence. The UN Security Council has not been asked to hold an emergency meeting to condemn the “transfer” and “displacement” of hundreds of families in Sinai.

For years those in Israel who are concerned for the safety and security of Israel and its citizens have been told by all and sundry, including our former president, that the PA President Abbas, now in his tenth year of a four year term of office, is a moderate leader. That Israel can rely on him to ensure that safety and security once all the Israeli settlers are removed from the West Bank.

That same ‘all and sundry’ seem to have been silenced by the latest outbursts by moderate President Abbas. The violence, rioting and stone-throwing in Jerusalem, mainly on the Temple Mount, are a direct result of his incitement; his and that of the Palestinian leadership.

In the official Palestinian Authority daily, Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, there have been a number of cartoons which cannot be defined as other than to encourage Palestinians to throw stones at Israelis.

What could be clearer than depicting a father, in front of the Dome of the Rock, handing his son a slingshot and telling him: “Purification before prayer is performed with stones”?

The incitement doesn’t end with a call to ‘merely’ throw stones. It includes incitement to kill, to murder. The Palestinian response to the point blank attempted murder of Rabbi Glick in Jerusalem by a convicted terrorist has been chilling.

PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas referred to the terrorist as a “Shahid” – a Martyr who “rose to Heaven while defending our people’s rights and holy places.” Abbas called Israel’s apprehending and killing the terrorist in a shoot-out an “abominable crime”.

Adnan Ghaith, director of the Fatah branch in Jerusalem added: ‘We in Fatah are not ashamed to take responsibility for the heroic act carried out today. …, Fatah was and remains on the frontline of resistance activity, and calls on all Palestinians to unite against the occupation. …Allah has honored you with Martyrdom (Shahada), for which all men yearn. Your bullets were a beacon [illuminating] a path that had become dark, the light of which will continue to shine for years to come’.
