Points to Ponder   Number 18    22nd September, 2014

As the eve of the 24th September marks the beginning of the year 5775 for Jews all over the world I would like to take this opportunity to wish my Jewish readers a happy, healthy and peaceful new year.

One of the problems with which we, the Jewish people, grapple is that of the epidemic more commonly known as anti-Semitism. Very simply put, when Jews are demonized, delegitimized or examined under microscope of double standards, that is anti-Semitism.

Blaming the Jews themselves for the spread of this virus by offering many far-fetched and contradictory theories is merely obfuscating.

Anne Bayefsky, a human rights scholar and activist who directs the Touro College Institute on Human Rights is a barrister and solicitor whose areas of expertise include international human rights law, equality rights, and constitutional human rights law. She is a member of the International Law Association Committee on International Human Rights Law and Practice.

She firmly believes that the United Nations is the world’s leading purveyor of anti-Semitism and does not hesitate to say so.

The point to ponder is what makes this virus spread unabated and so rapidly. “Blame the Jews” has now evolved into “blame the Israelis” and in casting blame on the Israelis, just any fabrication will do. It can be false information about the events here in August or it can be as bizarre as the medieval claim that we use the blood of a child, Christian or Moslem, to bake matza (the unleavened bread used on Passover).

Timon Dias, a Dutch columnist, has published many articles on the problematic aspects of Muslim integration in Western societies Islam and Middle Eastern politics. He believes that the current spike in violence, verbal and physical, against Jewish communities is a direct result of a pro-Gaza stance and the lies on which it is based.

I thank my readers for the following clips which certainly raise some points to ponder.

This one is especially for my Australian readers.

And this is particularly for those in the UK and the EU.

And I end on a lighter note – with a delightful rap with many, many points to ponder.
